Physics Form 5: Chapter 4 - Cathode Ray Properties

Properties of cathode ray:
  • Moves in straight line

Cathode rays are being blocked by Maltese cross and a cross-shaped shadow is formed. This shows that cathode rays travel in straight line.

  • Carries momentum and energy
  • Are charged negative
  • Can be deflected by electric field

  • Can be deflected by magnetic field.
The path traced is an arc of a circle. Fleming's Left-hand Rule is used to determine the deflection of cathode rays.
  •  Can produce fluorescence when they strike at fluorescent material
